Yeah, I think a lot of ACT principles are helpful here. I come out of a more traditional cognitive behavioral framework, but one of the ways I think ACT and the mindfulness movement generally has really enriched our understanding of this stuff is the simple idea that sometimes the best way to move out of a difficult circumstance is to be genuinely accepting of the parts of that circumstance that aren’t under our direct control (emotions, for example). I think this ability then allows for a lot more flexibility and thought and behavior as well as the ability to get clearer on values, both of which are pretty big in ACT.
